Teacher of Business Studies and EconomicsFrom September 1998 2 year fixed term appointmentwith possibility of permanent appointment thereafter The PersonThe vacancy has arisen at short notice as one of our current staff is taking leave of absence for two years to teach at university in New Zealand. We are seeking an able Economics or Business graduate with a teaching qualification and experience of successful teaching at pre-university level. We are very happy to consider applications from newly qualified teachers, whose teaching experience would in consequence be limited. For other teachers, experience in the International Baccalaureate and at American undergraduate level and/or in an international school would be helpful but is not essential. However, what are essential are energy, enthusiasm, professionalism and a commitment to internationalism. The Courses Currently, the Economics/Business Courses offered at St. Clare's are as follows: International Baccalaureate Diploma Course Economics at Higher and Standard levels Business and Organisation at Higher level only. Liberal Arts, Foundation Course, European Advanced Studies Introduction to Economics, Introduction to Business - both assume no previous knowledge Macro and Micro Economics, Development Economics - more specialist courses with prerequisites
International Baccalaureate courses at Higher level are approximately equivalent to "A" level courses. IB Standard level courses are intermediate in standard between GCSE and "A" level. It is expected that teaching associated with this post will be slanted towards Business Studies courses. The Department The teacher appointed will join a full-time head of department and a part-time member of staff who was formerly head of department. Both Economics and Business are popular and very successful subjects within the International Baccalaureate, and a significant number of students proceed to universities in Britain or elsewhere to read related subjects. There is particular interest in Business and Organisation from students from Russia, the former Soviet republics and the Far East, and growth in the subject is associated with increasing numbers of students from these countries. The University Foundation Course includes a Business stream, which attracts a small number of students who intend to study Business at UK universities later. More advanced courses in Economics are offered to our visiting US university students, and to students of other nationalities on the European Advanced Studies Programme. The Economics and Business Department forms part of the larger Social Studies Department (which also includes history, geography, philosophy, psychology, politics and sociology). The Social Studies Department occupies a newly acquired and refurbished house, with teaching rooms, a computer suite and staff work room. Economics and Business are well-resourced with books, videos etc, and increasing use is being made of CD-ROMs and IT for teaching and independent student learning. The hours of work The teaching load at St. Clare's will average 21 hours a week on up to 180 days per annum, with a further 10 days availability for staff development and administration. It is expected that teaching will be arranged throughout the academic year and summer involvement is not anticipated. As teaching requirements vary from term to term, it is likely that the number of hours taught in the Autumn term will be less than 21 hours, and above that figure in Spring and Summer terms. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the College's extracurricular programme. The Salary etc St. Clare's teachers are paid on the National Pay Spine for teachers, according to qualifications and experience, up to a current maximum for an assistant teacher of £22,023. Teachers join the national Teachers' Pensions Agency scheme. Free lunches are offered on normal teaching days. Accomodation Accommodation may be available for a single person in one of the College hostels for senior students (aged over 20).
