General English

Basic Programme

15 hours per week of English language skills study

Standard Programme

21 hours per week of English language learning

Programme includes:

Intensive Programme

26 hours per week of English language learning

Programme includes:

  • 15 hours English language skills study plus
  • 6 hours Complementary Studies plus
  • 3 hours of additional Complementary Studies or supervised self study plus
  • 2 hours teacher-directed study in the self access centre

Your course includes:

  • All skills: speaking, listening, reading & writing
  • Grammar & vocabulary building
  • Study visits to places of interest with your teacher
  • Use of St Clare’s self-access centre & computer facilities
  • Regular homework
  • Progress tests
  • Final report and attendance certificate

Cambridge English Examinations

You can prepare for the following Cambridge Examinations:

Preparation for these examinations will be incorporated into your morning lessons. Students attending 21 or 26 hours of lessons per week can choose examination preparation options as part of their Complementary Studies in the afternoon.

IELTS & TOEFL Examinations

You can prepare for these Examinations while you are here. You will study 15 hours of General English followed by six hours of examination preparation each week. These examinations can be taken throughout the year. You need to book your examination 6 weeks before the test!

The IELTS test is taken in Oxford and the TOEFL test is taken in London

Private Lessons

These lessons are designed to meet your individual needs. The minimum stay is one week. You can come for as long as you like and study 3, 4, 5 or 6 hours per day.

You can also do a General English course and some extra private lessons in the afternoon.

English plus Academic Subjects

This course is called The Advanced Studies Programme. It combines English language learning with academic subjects studied at university level. In order to take this course you need:

  • To be 18 years old or over
  • To be qualified for university entrance in your home country
  • Have an upper intermediate level of English (IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 170)

You study 10 hours of English and three academic subjects.

In academic subject classes you are in class with native English speakers from American universities

English for Business 23+

This course is designed for students who want to focus on English for business purposes. You need to be intermediate level or above.

  • The courses take place in July and August and last 2 or 3 weeks
  • Students must be over the age of 23
  • There are 21 hours of lessons each week

General English language students on the Standard and Intensive course 18+ can choose Business English as a Complementary Study subject.

General English 23+

This course is provides a focus on improving confidence and effective communication in General English. You need to be intermediate level or above.

  • The courses take place in July and August and last 2 or 3 weeks
  • Students must be over the age of 23
  • There are 21 hours of lessons each week

Complete beginners and false beginners are welcome at St Clare’s. You do private lessons initially until you are able to join one of our group courses.
