1953-2003 - 50 Years of Promoting International Education & Understanding

Organised by Ulf Benetter (English Course 1957)

Co-founder of St Clare's, Oxford, Anne Dreydel (seated)The first event to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of St. Clare's was held over the weekend of 20 - 21 September. It started when Ulf Benetter (English Course, 1957) decided to reunite former classmates for a weekend in Oxford, some of whom had not been in touch with each other or the College for 45 years.

Twelve of Ulf's contemporaries from eleven countries came back to reminisce and to see how the passage of time had altered Oxford, St Clare's and each other. Co-founder Anne Dreydel and Principal Boyd Roberts joined them for a lunch hosted by St. Clare's in New Place. Most had not been back in Oxford since they left in the late 1950s, when the only teaching and residential building was 141 Banbury Road. It still holds many memories for all those who were present at the reunion. "When we came here in 1956/57, we were unwritten pages. We were young, innocent and ready to learn," said Ulf. "We came to a school with very high teaching standards, exemplified by Anne Dreydel and co-founder Pamela Morris." St. Clare's is pleased that these high standards are continuous to this day.
