From late August
2004 to cover maternity leave
Background to the post
We need a competent, intelligent person to join the science team at St.Clare's.
The job involves all areas of support for science teaching, with an emphasis
on Chemistry and Physics.
We have four small laboratories: one each for Chemistry,
Physics, Ecosystems and Biology. There are two small preparation rooms
adjacent to Biology and Chemistry laboratories, and a greenhouse. We have
plans for a new, purpose built Science block in the foreseeable future.
The team is composed of nine Science teachers and two technicians, one
of whom is taking maternity leave this summer. The job involves close
liaison with us all. Our students are mostly aged 16-19 years old and
they are studying the International Baccalaureate programme or taking
a Pre IB course. They come from all over the world, and are very varied
in their background and expectations. Most of our students go on to study
at universities in Britain, the United States or elsewhere.
Principal duties
Whilst much of the daily routine involves preparation of apparatus and
solutions, clearing up, photocopying and so on, there is also scope for
more challenging tasks such as planning new equipment, helping students
with their own research projects and even designing new laboratories.
We take Biology and Ecosystems students to Pembrokeshire each May for
field work, and traditionally our technicians come too.
Person specification
Our ideal applicant will enjoy working amongst
young people in an international environment. He or she will be dependable
and calm, even when there are many competing demands. Good IT skills and
the ability to drive a minibus would be very useful though not essential.
As a First Aid qualification is essential, training will be provided if
necessary.
The person appointed will assist our existing technician
and work with her. He or she will report to the Head of Science.
Terms and conditions
The Salary is related pro rata to the scales for university technicians
at point C or D.
