Reporting relationship
The Senior Porter will report to the Estates Manager. In certain areas close liaison will be required with other members of staff, in particular on security matters with the Health & Safety Officer.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

1. Management of Porters

  • Direct management of the Porters team including scheduling of staff to ensure full cover at all times. Liaison with the Maintenance Foreman as required where additional cover is needed during holidays or sickness. Ensure time sheets are completed on a weekly basis and forwarded to the Estates Manager.
  • To identify and implement improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Porters Team
  • To be responsible for the day to day administration and Health and Safety of the Porters Team

2. Security and Safety

  • to lock and unlock the College, set and disable alarms and to carry out checks on College vehicles as set out on the Security schedule.
  • To lock and unlock classrooms on the main site and to rearrange classroom furniture as and when required
  • To monitor property including residential property for open windows/doors
  • To ensure that all incident, fire and other statutory logbooks are kept up to date
  • To challenge any unauthorised visitors or persons acting suspiciously, and to record details on any such persons
  • To ensure that all security and CCTV systems are fully functional and any data to be recorded by these systems is securely stored and is in compliance with current legislation
  • To assist in the development / introduction of security and safety improvements
  • When not at the porter's lodge, to ensure that you can be located by leaving a note of your whereabouts or by maintaining contact by other pre-established means
  • To ensure that the central establishment keys and the central residential keys are kept secure at all times and suitable control and recording procedures are in place
  • To be on call for the alarm company and act as key holder

3. Reception

  • to distribute student mail on request during the evenings and at weekends
  • to answer telephone calls during the evenings and at weekends and to take and pass on messages
  • to assist visitors during the evenings and weekends, to assist new student arrivals and to assist during special days, eg. open day, graduation

4. Vehicle Maintenance

  • to ensure the College vehicles are cleaned daily and topped-up with fuel
  • to ensure vehicles are serviced in accordance with the servicing log by arranging routine servicing and delivery of vehicles to be serviced
  • to take and record bookings for the College vehicles as requested

Any of the above if carried out during the evening or at weekends should not compromise site security

5. Cleaning

  • to ensure that the staff room is tidy and that used crockery is washed
  • to tidy the front and rear of the following areas; (except those maintained by the Catering Unit during working hours)
    • Central College area
    • Nos.: 133,135,137,139,141/143

    These areas are to be swept and the bins emptied at least twice a day. They should be scrubbed down and washed once a week. The ashbins should be emptied daily and washed once a week. Light fittings to be checked daily and cleaned once a week.

  • To clear up the hall after functions

6. General maintenance

  • to carry out general maintenance tasks as appropriate. This may include replacement of lightbulbs, handyman duties, painting, cleaning out drains and gutters, moving furniture and luggage, driving College vehicles, picking up and delivering stores, etc.
  • setting up chairs, etc. in the hall and other areas as requested
  • setting up classrooms as requested.

7. General

  • to deal with any problems or student queries that may arise during the evenings and at weekends
  • to assist the Senior Resident when dealing with student problems during out of work hours, seeking guidance from Senior Staff on call when appropriate
  • to represent the College to students, parents and visitors
  • to deputise for the Estates Manager in his/her absence and undertake other appropriate duties as required.

Terms & Conditions
40 hours on a weekly rota, to include day, evenings and weekend shifts. Salary range £18,015 - £21,469 per annum. Contributory pension, Life Assurance Plan, 22 days holiday plus Christmas break and free meals when working.
