Communities divided by long-standing political and religious hatred and violence ... this is not some far-flung corner of the Third World, but the very recent and ongoing history of part of the British Isles. This is precisely what a group of our IB students have been discovering in their visit to Northern Ireland, which took place in late November. They came face to face with infamous names such as the Maze Prison and Shankhilland Falls Roads, had their photos taken in front of the brightly-coloured but disturbing paramilitary murals, and saw for themselves the scenes of past reprisal, recrimination and surveillance. But alongside the grim reminders of the Troubles, the students also experienced the beauty of the Antrim coastline, and of the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle, and the legendary hospitality of the people of Northern Ireland.
