Just before Christmas, we received the very sad news that Jack Jones had died, on Thursday 16 December 2004. Jack was head of maths here from 1977, appointed to teach maths courses as part of the team introducing the IB. He came to St. Clare's as a young teacher, after study and research at St. Andrews, and a couple of years teaching in Penrith. In the more than 20 years he taught here, he worked with generations of IB students until he retired, on ground of ill health, in 1998. Students and colleagues appreciated and valued his capacity as a mathematician, as a clear explainer of difficult concepts, and the interest he took in all his students. They also enjoyed his good humour and sense of fun. He enjoyed the company of students and staff in the St. Clare's community, and earned the affections of hundreds of people during his time here. His funeral took place on Wednesday 22 December, and there was strong representation from present and former colleagues. Our sympathy goes to his widow Margaret, and his daughters Sally and Trini.
