Job Description
All applicants should read the following information:
Background to the post
The post becomes vacant on the decision of our current adviser to take
up a senior management post at a school in Malawi.
The post
The Careers / Higher Education Adviser will report to the Deputy Principal.
The post-holder is expected to be proactive in relation to careers and
higher education within the College and to establish and maintain systems
that address students' individual needs without always dealing with them
as individuals.
There are three principal elements to the post:
1. Careers education
Until relatively recently, the emphasis within St. Clare's had been on
university placement, with relatively little careers education per se.
Although steps have been taken to address this deficiency, there is more
to do. A significant proportion of students join the College with unrealistic
ambitions for the future. Others have relatively little idea of what they
wish to do later in life. We are concerned that students do not make decisions
about courses that lead them towards career expectations which are unrealistic
or inappropriately matched to their abilities and aptitudes. Because of
the relatively short duration of students' stay at the College, it is
imperative that this intervention takes place as quickly as possible after
their arrival. The Careers / Higher Education Adviser is expected to play
a key role in this through:
- further developing a programme of careers education
- arranging careers visits and talks
- maintaining a careers library
- developing opportunities for students to engage
in work-shadowing, internships and other forms of work experience (primarily,
but not exclusively within holiday periods)
- offering or arranging careers counselling on an
individual basis
- communicating with parents over issues relating
to individual students, as appropriate
- informing and advising students of gap year possibilities,
and to assist with placements, as appropriate
2. To oversee higher education placements,
with particular reference to the UK and other countries outside the USA
Most of the higher education applications are traditionally to British
universities, with approximately 10% being to institutions in countries
other than the UK and the US. Of the 100 or so UCAS applications per year,
most are from students taking the IB Diploma, but there are always applicants
from the University Foundation Course and the Advanced Studies Programme
as well as occasional students taking English Language courses. Each year,
a number of alumni also apply for higher education places via St. Clare's.
A small number of adult students may also apply for graduate courses in
the UK or elsewhere, and the post includes working with them on their
choices and applications. The post-holder would:
- preside over university / higher education applications
- (there is another member of staff who has responsibility for US college
counselling, but the person appointed to this post will have overall
responsibility for coordinating all higher education applications.)
- arrange information sessions in connection with
university applications to non-US institutions
- provide students and parents with information on
which they may base decisions and on the application processes
- advise students on an individual basis on courses
/ institutions
- negotiate with universities on behalf of students,
and on issues of importance to the College
- maintain the College's careers / higher education
library
- oversee the UCAS procedures to UK universities
and similar applications processes to other non-US universities, including
editing of references
- compile statistics on university applications,
acceptances and destinations of students
3. Work on future planning with adult
students
It has become apparent in recent years that many adult students, on English
Language, Liberal Arts and Advanced Studies Programmes are at points in
their lives when they are thinking about the future, and the directions
it may take. Many English Course students are taking a break between education
and work, or between posts. The post holder will be central to the development
of provision for these students in introducing provision to assist adult
students in thinking about their futures which may include:
- obtaining / devising / administering testing
or other instruments to assist in their thinking
- arranging work experience opportunities
- running courses / sessions for people to discuss
strategies for thinking about the future / making life choices
- advising students on an individual basis

There is the possibility of the post-holder taking extended holidays
outside of the academic year and the periods associated with examination
results, with a salary adjustment.
Teaching and other activities take place as normal on bank holidays during
term time. Some occasional weekend work will also be required to include
parents' days, graduation, alumni reunions etc. Time off in lieu would
