My time in New York was professionally fulfilling and rewarding. The program was funded by the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University, and was a time of intense research, study and reflection. The Klingenstein Center focuses on independent schools and education, and, I think, is the only institute in the world to do so. My research project focused on the development of attitudes and values in relation to global citizenship.

We also spent time looking at philosophical aspects of education, and the role of independent schools within society. Part of our focus was on current issues and trends in US education.

Most of the participants were from the US, with two heads of South African schools. The program for heads of schools included a number of sessions held jointly with students on the one year Masters program at the Center.

I was the first UK school head to attend the heads program, and there was considerable interest in our work at St. Clare's from colleagues and students at the Klingenstein Center.

I was also able to meet Brad Jordan, an IB alumnus currently studying at Columbia.

I would like to express thanks and gratitude to Governors for agreeing for me to take part, and to Paul Mason, Tom Walsh and Keith Allen for enabling me to take up the opportunity by holding the fort while I was away.
