This year we had a record number of 2nd year IB students - 17 in all - completing the US application process by submitting applications. US university acceptances are final, ie. not conditional on exam results as are most UK university offers.

Among the 14 successful applicants in the graduating class of 2005 there have been some notable successes: Mato Lagator is going to Harvard, the first time we have had a student accepted there in 20 years. Jeffrey Waheed is going to Stanford, Milo Dee to Amherst, Katherine Glass to Middlebury and Zainab Hussain to Mount Holyoke - all extremely selective colleges among the 30 most prestigious of the 3,000 or so in the States. The Rhode Island School of Design, where Zhanar Serikpayeva is going, is probably the top art college in the States. Again it has been nearly 20 years since we have had a student accepted there.

Another notable success is that Isra Salim has won a prestigious Kofi Annan Scholarship to Macalester College in Minnesota. Macalester is one of the very top colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the States and is the alma mater of the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan.

While there is a natural tendency to concentrate on the high flyers, the successes of other applicants should not be overlooked; the college which have accepted them may not be so well known here but are highly thought of in the States, many with special strengths which have attracted our students.
