Background to the post
The Library is a refurbished Edwardian building which was opened in 1995. It houses the main academic resources of the college and includes a stock of about 35,000 books, 60 English and foreign language periodicals and newspapers and audio-visual resources. The centre provides working space for 80 users and incorporates a computer network of 15 computers for student use, video-edit suite, photocopier, library office and storage space.
The library management computer network is Oliver.
The Library is open all year round apart from Christmas to New Year. The full staff complement comprises a Senior Librarian, Assistant librarian, a full-time library assistant who is also the AV technician, and five part-time staff who are mainly responsible for covering evening and weekend shifts. The post being advertised is to fill the vacancy for the Assistant Librarian.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Deputising for the Senior Librarian
- Assisting the Senior Librarian in running the Library including
- Assisting at the issue desk
- Assisting with library housekeeping tasks including cataloguing
- Dealing with overdue reminders
- Shelving
- Issue of video keys and controls, fax/photocopy cards, etc.
- Control of newspapers and periodicals
- Textbook sales to students
- Assisting in overseeing of the Library computers (hardware and software) and photocopier
- Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment
- Assisting staff and students in the use of the Library's computers
- Supervising students using the Library
- Assisting with orientation of new students to the Library
- Assisting with the design and delivery of information skills sessions
- Deputising for the AV technician on occasions
- Maintaining the library section of the website
- Other duties as required by the Senior Librarian
Person specification We are looking for
- A qualified librarian
- 2-3 years experience, preferably in 16+ education
- An interest in working in an international community of young people and staff
- Experience in working with computers and particularly with library management software
- An ability to communicate enthusiastically and effectively with a wide variety of library users
- Preferably experience in website management
Terms and conditions
Hours:
35 hours a week with one hour for lunch. Some flexibility is essential here. This will involve one evening or weekend shift per week during term-time, to ensure staffing of the library throughout its opening hours, for which there is time off in lieu. There might be an occasional requirement for evening or weekend work outside term-time when courses are being run by the College.
Holiday:
22 working days per year and the period over Christmas when the College is closed (24 December – 1 January inclusive). The College operates during bank holidays and work may be required on one of more of these days, with time off in lieu.
Pension: A contributory pension is offered through St Clare's group personal pension scheme. The employer pays double the contribution of the employee, up to a maximum of 10% of gross salary, ie. the employer pays up to 10%, and the employee pays up to 5%. Employee's contributions above 5% may be made, but do not attract a matching contribution from the employer.
There is a death-in-service benefit of four times annual salary.
Salary:
Salary will be on St. Clare's Scale 4 for Administrative, Technical and Clerical staff within the range of £17,099 - £19,723 per annum. Starting salary will be determined according to qualifications and experience with annual increments (subject to satisfactory performance) and annual cost of living increases. The St. Clare's scale is related to similar national scales.
Free lunches: are offered in the College dining room during the academic year and major summer courses on which you are working and when meals are being served to students.
Probationary period: The first six months will be probationary, within which notice is two weeks on either side. Thereafter notice is one month on either side.
