Job Description

We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable activity staff who are committed to providing a quality programme and who will always have the students' best interests in mind. The two courses, from 5 July to 25 July and 26 July to 15 August, are always popular with students and staff alike. However, the summer school is demanding and Activity Organisers will be expected to make a full contribution to the pastoral and social life of the youngsters. Activity Organisers report to the Course Director for contractual matters and to the Activity Director on each site for specific day-to-day duties.

Activity staff profile

Preferably qualified as a teacher and / or sports instructor in one or more disciplines. Minimum requirement: with work experience of a similar nature or currently following a course of study at tertiary level with experience/special ability in the following areas: sports; drama; arts and crafts; knowledge of local area / culture. Candidates who hold a current first aid certificate, lifeguard qualification or driving licence (for minibus driving) are desirable.

Duties:

  1. Arriving at the course centre 2 days before the start of the course to attend orientation sessions and to make preparations for the courses. A separate payment will be made for this period. Please note that full-board and accommodation is provided for residential posts.
  2. Under the direction of the on-site Activity Director to work a 6-day week in flexible shifts, the majority of which take place in the afternoons and evenings. You will need to work 12 sessions per week. Please note that activity organisers have one day off per week, which is unlikely to be at weekends.
  3. Excursions: to assist with planning of and implementation of set excursions. During the excursion to act as a guide, keep all monies and receipts, and take care of the students at all times. You will need to motivate the students and lead by example!
  4. To prepare for and implement a range of on and off-site activities on the programme. You will need to participate actively and encourage involvement. Preparing for activities may involve buying materials, confirming bookings/times of activities, advertising the events to the students, liaising with and securing the co-operation of teaching staff.
  5. Taking a pastoral role involving the supervision, welfare and discipline of students. This includes ensuring bedrooms are kept clean and tidy, bedtimes are adhered to, taking a nightly role-call and administering ‘lights-out', being on night-duty on a rota basis, in case of emergency.
  6. Reporting to the Course Director or Welfare Officer immediately on any student illness, accident and loss or damage to property.
  7. Checking that students are not in their rooms during lesson time.
  8. Organising a laundry rota for students.
  9. Supervising at meal times on a rota basis.

Rates of pay

Activity staff are graded according to the following criteria:
Grade I: £288.40 per week inclusive of Holiday Pay at 10.769% (plus full board and accommodation). For under 20 year olds with no relevant nationally recognised sports qualifications.

Grade II: £321.68 per week inclusive of Holiday Pay at 12% (plus full board and accommodation). For over 20 year olds with no nationally recognised sports qualifications or 18/19 year olds with a relevant nationally recognised sports qualification.

Grade III: £343.87 per week inclusive of Holiday Pay at 10.769% (plus full board and accommodation). For over 20 year olds with a relevant nationally recognised sports qualification or teacher qualified with experience.

Supplements

  • Additional sessions are paid at £25.25 per half day or evening
  • Induction and setting up at the Summer Junior Campus: £50.00 per day.
