St. Clare's Senior Dinner
140 senior students and staff from the Bardwell Road Centre sat down for this semester's formal
dinner during the second full week of January. We met in one of the colleges of the university
(St. Hugh's College) to enjoy a true Oxford experience.
Pre-meal drinks were served in the Mordan Hall, overlooked by portraits of famous alumni – most
notably the political activist from Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi. From there we moved through to
the dining room laid out with high table, formal seating with name cards, candelabra and low
lighting, speeches between courses, college wine, coffee and not forgetting the college's own
after-dinner mints!
Students came from 29 different countries on a variety of courses (Liberal Arts, University Foundation,
English Language and Teacher Training). It was a first opportunity to learn more about each other,
to get beneath the national stereotypes and to see the essential similarities between people from across
the globe.
It was, in short, a fulfilment of the St. Clare's mission ‘to advance international education and
understanding'.
