Human Rights Action Centre Visit
On March 31st seven members of the human rights action group went to visit the Amnesty International
headquarters in London. We were really honoured to visit the amazing offices and to see how the whole
organisation works.
Our day started with a warm welcome from some employers, this was followed by a presentation on Amnesty
International, their campaigns and the results they have achieved.
After the introduction session we read a play as a group with students from Westminster Academy, the
other student group present. That helped us to discover who created Amnesty International and how everything
started and how it has become a 3 million member group today.
Just before lunch we focused our attention on the current situation of Roma people in Europe. An Amnesty
spokesperson raised our awareness of four different campaigns.
We had a short lunch break before starting to take action. We were divided into four small groups and we
had to produce a little animation on the four different campaigns for Roma people. These were:
- End segregation in Slovakian schools
- Roma people being evicted in France
- Roma people living in substandard living conditions
- Racist attacks towards Roma people in Hungary
The animations that we made are going to be posted on the Amnesty Flickr page.
We finished our day by having a tour of the offices. The person that showed us around explained the different
roles of all the people working there allowing us to realise how much work goes on behind the scenes of this
worldwide organisation.
