Valiant effort in Schools Final

Woodgreen School - 65 vs St. Clare's - 56

Woodgreen advanced to the finals by defeating OCVC by 1 point in a heated semi-final that same week. St. Clare's Boys' advanced to the finals by defeating King Alfred by 6 points.

St. Clare's were without Captain Michal Wisniewski as he was sitting the IBl exams and the team missed his experience, scoring and defensive ability. Apart from that the Team remained the same:

#3 Nikola Vucicevic
#9 Amir Amangeldi
#12 Alex Machado
#17 Emilis Romaskevicius
#23 Mohammadali Badri
#39 Tinnabhand Patana-Anake
#44 Rokas Augunas

Woodgreen School had a 'lethal weapon' with them called Ashley Cox, one of the most prolific scorers in the U18 English National League and Coach Marulanda knew that Ashley would be a handful and that St. Clare's would need to dedicate a lot of attention to trying to stop him from scoring. That task was shared between Emilis and Amir, whereas Tinnabhand had to handle their Point Guard.

St. Clare's applied a lot of pressure on the front and back court trying to pick up easy points and forcing Woodgreen to make mistakes. St. Clare's played their heart out and by the end of the first quarter Woodgreen were up 18-14. St. Clare's were close enough to make a run, but they had been poor from the outside and that had to change urgently.

Woodgreen came out hard and went up 29-16 by the end of the 5th minute. A time out re-organised St. Clare's to make a quick comeback and by the 7th minute the scores was 29-23, but Woodgreen would not let St. Clare's make a solid enough comeback ramping up the score board to a whooping 43-30 by the end of the first half.

St. Clare's came back from the break wanting to get the game back in control and so they did, by the 6th minute they were only 2 points down, 47-45. However, Woodgreen recovered and finished the 3rd quarter 55-47.

Early in the fourth quarter, our Point Guard and high scoring player Alex Machado fouled out, which added too much pressure to an already tiring team. Rokas, Nikola and Emilis, did not shy away from it, but Woodgreen's scoring power was just greater on the day and finally they won 65-56.
