Summer in Sierra Leone
Ian Gill, Head of Science at St. Clare's, spent time this summer teaching students studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma at local schools in Freetown, Sierra Leone in West Africa. St. Clare's donated a number of items this year, including a laptop, science equipment, books, pens and memory sticks, pre-filled with science worksheets. As Ian says, ‘the schools are incredibly grateful for everything, as they have so little there. I have been trying to support science staff, as well as teaching classes of students – up to 60 in a class. Usually they have a blackboard, although sometimes we have had to hunt for the chalk. Unable to pay their bills, schools have no electricity, or water, no photocopiers, no text books and minimal equipment in most places'.![]() |
