Congratulations to IB Teacher Jos Vos on his translation of The Tale of Genji, which was recently awarded five stars in the leading Dutch "literary supplement". It is the first complete Dutch edition of a novel written 1000 years ago by Murasaki Shikibu, a high-ranking Japanese court lady.
Jos, who teachers Dutch Literature at St. Clare's, says that "although not 'the world's first novel', it's definitely one of the greatest: a story of love and loss, approximately 1500 pages long and full of psychological insight. It also gives a very colourful portrait of the 11th century court and its elegant pursuits." Jos recently discussed his translation on Dutch television, as well as taking part in a Question & Answer Session with students from Leiden University.
