In the last year, St. Clare's student council worked together to raise a fantastic £1000 for WATU, a charity that helps children across the world access education. From organising fun events to selling hoodies, our Student Council's efforts mean that 3 children in Tanzania will be able to attend secondary schools.
We recently received the letter below from WATU, thanking our students for their efforts:
- Dear Josh, Manfredi, Elias and Keidi,
On behalf of the students and staff at Watu Secondary School in Shiri Mgungani in northern Tanzania I would like to thank you very much indeed for the generous donation from St Clares’ Student Council which we received recently via Mr Walsh.
In fact, your funds will go to support three young first year students at the school, the twins Rose and Rozina Gervas, and Maimua Hamis. My colleague, Mr Josiah Mchome, who is the local manager of our school, describes these three children as coming from very poor, large families where you can imagine that there is very little money left over each month for education. Even so, these families are prepared to scrape together about £150 a year in monthly instalments towards the education of their children.
You will, I am sure, be aware that in a so-called developing country like Tanzania there is insufficient pubic money to provide free education so that every family, whether their children are in public or private schools, has to contribute something. In our case, we are offering a good education (much much better than that obtaining in public schools where, unfortunately, teachers are often very demotivated, there are frequently very inadequate facilities and few teaching materials and the children, although they are enthusiastic for education, often go for weeks without any effective teaching at all) which is heavily subsidised by generous donors like yourselves. Rose, Rozina and Maimuna are intelligent children who we have every reason to believe will be successful.
Thank you to all the students involved for their fantastic fundraising efforts!
