History trip to the war museum
Our
University Foundation Course History students went on an educational visit to the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum
(SofO) in Woodstock to visit two exhibitions:
Winston Churchill, Oxfordshire Hussar, 1901-1965 and
Children and War.
They discussed how the displays were organised; what was included, what got left out, and whether this mattered, and also
the differences between history and memory. They also discussed the different portrayals of Winston Churchill and the
experiences of those who sought asylum in Britain during that period.
Marie said: "It was interesting to learn how to remain objective about history, even when visiting a museum."
Carla thought: "Learning about the experience of children during war was interesting, because we looked at very personal
objects that are hard to find nowadays."
Martin "enjoyed finding out interesting facts about Churchill's early life, especially about his military career."
You can view both exhibitions online at the
SofO website.
