Liberal Arts Programme
Welcome to the
section of this site which gives details about Study Abroad options
at the college. St Clare's, Oxford is an independent college founded
in 1953 to foster international understanding. This remains our
principal goal.
The City of
Oxford was founded in the time of Alfred the Great and is one of
the leading cultural and artistic centres in England. It has two
major universities, Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University.
The total student population is over 30,000, who are drawn from
all over the world. London is just one hour away by train.
The Liberal
Arts Programme has provided excellent opportunities for college
and university students from America, Europe and elsewhere for nearly
forty years. We are affiliated to a number of institutions in the
USA including Marquette University and the University of San Diego.
The Liberal
Arts Programme is designed
- to enable
college and university students to supplement their studies with
a year or semester of study in Oxford
- to help you
make full use of the rich resources and opportunities which our
Oxford location provides
- to enable
you to contribute to the local community through service opportunities
and internships
- to provide
an academically challenging experience in intensive, small classes
(including tutorials for one or two students)
- to give you
a truly international experience through living and studying with
other students from different countries in our culturally diverse
residential community, and through facilitating your travels throughout
Europe and Britain
- to give you
close personal attention - inside and outside of the classroom
- during your time in Oxford.
A full Liberal
Arts education must go beyond the acquisition of specific knowledge
and skills. At St. Clare's you are encouraged to develop a critical
approach to learning, which is sensitive, questioning and enquiring.
Our statement of academic purpose sets out the College's educational
aims.
St. Clare's
seeks to develop in students:
- Intellect,
imagination and independence of mind
- Achievement
of depth and range of knowledge in a single area, or in a subject
studies through several disciplines
- A sense of
personal responsibility for their work
- Awareness
and understanding of the rich diversity of cultures.
St. Clare's
encourages students:
- To complement
their academic study by engaging in creative, aesthetic and physical
activities
- To take full
advantage of the rich opportunities which Oxford provides
- To learn
from and contribute to the local community of which the College
is a part
