1953-2003 - 50 Years of Promoting International Education & Understanding

Activities Teacher (for April 2003 or sooner if possible)
Job Description

Please read in conjunction with Notes for Job Applicants for further general information on St Clare's.

Background to the post

St. Clare's is committed to promoting personal development, education and recreation through student participation in a wide range of activities outside the academic curriculum. For students on the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, participation in activities is a formal curriculum requirement (CAS - Creativity, Action and Service), necessary for the award of the IB Diploma.

A central Activities Office co-ordinates and runs an extensive programme of activities for all St. Clare's students. The student body is unusually diverse for a College of our size, and changes during the course of the year.

There are four main groups of students:

  1. Students aged 16 - 20 preparing for university entrance, either directly or indirectly, on IB Diploma, pre-IB, and university foundation courses, or studying English language as a prelude to full-time academic study in English.
About 250 students; academic year only
  2. University level students on Liberal Arts programme - mainly from US universities. Age 20-22.
About 45 students, academic year only
  3. English language - adults
No upper age limit, though most are 18-23.
These courses are offered throughout the year, for anything from 2 weeks to one year. Students include a certain number of mature professional people (solicitors, doctors, business people) as well as those who are more immediately recognisable as "students".
About 80 students during the academic year, increasing during the summer,
  4. Short course students aged 10 - 18/19
Attending summer courses on the International College site (16+), or at Rye St. Antony School (10 - 16). Also includes visiting school groups during the academic year, and closed group courses elsewhere (e.g. in Cambridge this summer). Our IB Institute runs courses at Easter and during the summer and we also offer IB workshops for teachers.

Activities include social, cultural, aesthetic, sporting and other activities ranging from theatre visits to overseas multi-activity trips; in-house fashion shows to discos; trips to Brighton to pottery classes; conservation work to community service.

The post arises through the resignation of one of our 'Activities Teachers', who had particular talents in the area of female sports, though she also contributed to the programme of social events and organised a number of overseas trips.

We wish to continue with the development of the Activities Dept. and expect the successful candidate to play a full role.
The aims are:
- to expand the range of activities offered
- to attune the activities more precisely to the very different interests and needs of the diverse student body
- to encourage greater participation in activities by students
- to develop further the participation of teaching and other staff in activities with students
- to encourage students to make full and good use of their free time, in activities other than those based in pubs and clubs.
- to promote participation of students in activities, events, etc. in Oxford.

The dedicated activities team consists currently of four full-time and two part-time people. There is also a large team of visiting activities teachers, including sports coaches, yoga, photography and pottery teachers. Music teaching is provided by visiting teachers, arranged by the Music Co-ordinator. All established teachers are also expected to contribute to activities with students, sometimes in activities adjunct to the academic programme, which do not come under the oversight of the Activities Office.

Activities are currently arranged on- and off-site. Facilities include art, music and drama rooms, photography dark room, and a general purpose hall. As our on-site facilities for sports etc. are very limited (a consequence of being located in the leafy suburb of North Oxford), we make extensive use of hired and public fields and facilities. Horse riding (four horses) takes place at leased facilities outside Oxford. Two minibuses and a car are available for general College use.

Weekend and holiday trips are regularly arranged by the Activities Office to places such as Paris, Amsterdam, Scotland, Peru, Egypt, France (for skiing) and Kenya (safari/beach holiday).

The Activities Office is centrally located on the International College campus, and a presence is maintained at the Bardwell Road centre. Separate teams are based at other summer course centre.

During the summer courses and other vacation courses, activities play a particularly prominent role with an expanded team of temporary activities organisers usually directed by one of the regular activities team.
