Liberal Arts Programme

Autumn Semester 2002

To help you plan your semester; we have detailed below the list of main trips and excursions that the Liberal Arts Programme organises. Some of the trips are known as sponsored trips. This means that the cost is covered by the College and you will only need money for personal expenses to participate. Other trips are known as accompanied trips, which means you have to pay to participate. All trips, of course, are optional. Other general information regarding trips will be available to students on arrival. Please indicate on the Trips and Excursions Reservation form which you would like to join. By doing this you will help us organise the trips in advance more efficiently. For a number of the trips, no advance payment is required. However, for the trips to Glastonbury, Wales, Amsterdam and Canterbury advance payment is required - either in full or in part.

Take a look at some of our recent trips and excursions. In addition there are many trips open to all College students arranged by the Activities Department.

Students should note that there are limited places for some of the trips. This being the case, places will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend you pay the deposit/s for any of the accompanied trips you wish to go on in advance of coming to St Clare's as this secures your place. You can, of course, also pay the balance in advance. However, on arrival at St. Clare's there may be some spare places, and there will be a further opportunity to pay deposits/balances for the accompanied trips. Please note that the deadline for receipt of all deposits - and the Wales trip balance - is Monday 9 September. The remaining balances are due by Monday 7 October latest.

London - Saturday 7 September - Orientation Trip (Sponsored trip)
You will have the opportunity of a tour of London, visiting the London Museum, St. Paul's Cathedral, etc. This trip is sponsored by the College, with no charge to students, except for personal expenses for lunch, refreshments or souvenirs.

Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge - Sunday 8 September - Orientation Trip (Sponsored Trip)
Students will have the opportunity to visit three of the major historical sites in England. This trip is sponsored by the College, with no charge to students, except for lunch, refreshments or souvenirs.

Glastonbury - Saturday 14 September (Accompanied trip)
Discover the mystical heart of England where, according to legend, Jesus lived and King Arthur was buried. Price £30 includes transport, entrances to Glastonbury Abbey and lunch in a country pub. Students will require money for personal expenses. Places are limited to 14 students. Full payment either in advance or no later than Monday 9 September. This trip is not sponsored by the College, although students will be accompanied, as with other trips, by members of staff.

Wales - Friday 20 - Sunday 22 September - (Accompanied trip)
Staying on a working farm, with walking tours to ruined medieval castles. Price £65 includes transport, bed and breakfast Saturday dinner and all entrances. Students will need money for lunches, one evening meal and personal spending money. Places are limited to 14 students. A deposit of £40 should be paid either in advance but no later than Monday 9th September with the balance due preferably in advance, but no later than Monday 9th September. (Please note: this trip involves a 10-12 mile hike). This trip is not sponsored by the College, although students will be accompanied, as with other trips, by members of staff.

Royal Shakespeare Theatre - Tuesday 1 October - (Sponsored trip)
This trip to see a production of The Tempest at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre is sponsored by the College, with no charge to students except for personal expenses. Places will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and the trip is open to all students on the Programme.

Amsterdam - Friday 15 - Sunday 17 November - (Accompanied trip)
This is your chance to visit this wonderful old city with fabulous museums, markets and exciting nightlife! Price £250 includes return airfare on a scheduled flight from Heathrow, transfers to and from the airports, accommodation with breakfast for two nights in a centrally located hotel. Also included are entrances to Ann Frank's house, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum as well as a canal trip with pancakes and an Indonesian Rice Table dinner. Students will need money for lunches, one evening meal and personal spending money. A deposit of £100 should be paid either in advance but no later than Monday 9th September with the balance due preferably in advance, but no later than Monday 7 October. This trip is not sponsored by the College, although students will be accompanied, as with other trips, by members of staff.

Rochester, Canterbury and Dover - Saturday 30 November - Sunday 1 December - (Accompanied trip)
Visit Rochester, the home of Charles Dickens, with Cathedral and Castle; Canterbury, the most famous cathedral in Britain, and Dover, castle and the white cliffs including the secret Second World War tunnels. Price £70.00 includes transport, bed and breakfast hotel in Canterbury, entrances to the Dickens Centre, Canterbury Cathedral, Dover Castle, the secret war tunnels and dinner on Saturday night. Students will need money for lunches and personal expenses. Places limited to 15 students. A deposit of £40 should be paid either in advance or no later than Monday 9 September, with balances due preferably in advance, but no later than Monday 7 October. This trip is not sponsored by the College, although students will be accompanied, as with the other trips, by members of staff.

London - Saturday 7 December - (Sponsored trip)
Students will have the opportunity to have guided tours of the National Gallery and Tate Gallery. In addition, there will be a chance to do enjoy some free time. This trip is sponsored by the College, with no charge to students, except for lunch and personal expenses.

Although the information above is correct at the time of writing, St. Clare's reserves the right to alter the arrangements and, if necessary, alter quoted prices if circumstances dictate. Students should be assured that St. Clare's seeks out the most competitive prices available on scheduled air flights and hotels, etc.

Students are advised that other class trips may be on offer through the semester. These trips will be subsidised by St. Clare's, but students may be asked to pay a nominal charge of between £10.00 - £15.00 per trip. The Activities Department at St. Clare's also organises a variety of trips, activities and sporting events. These are open to all members of the College, including Liberal Arts Students, but are not run by the Liberal Arts Programme. Students will receive a list of these events during the Orientation period at the start of the semester. Further details will be available on arrival and in the Student Handbook.
