From the moment
your child arrives in the UK at the airport, our commitment is to
ensuring his/her safety and welfare at all times during their stay
with us.
The following
features of our special junior courses are designed to do just this:
Safe
and secure schools grounds
A secure
perimeter wall encompasses all the on-site school facilities. The
main school gate is locked each night. The residences have security
coded entrance doors which mean that only students and staff on
the course can enter.
High
Staff:Student Ratio
We can
take a maximum of just over 100 students on each 3-week course.
The ratio of staff:students on the courses is minimum 1:8; more
often 1:6. Staff working on these courses will include the following:
Directing
team: Course Director, Activities Director, Director of Studies,
Welfare Officer
Teachers: Up to 8* suitably qualified and experienced EFL teachers
(depending on exact student numbers)
Activities team: 6-8* activities staff separate from the
teaching team who work with the Activities Director to deliver an
exciting range of cultural, arts and sporting events/trips. (*depending
on student numbers)
Welfare
Staff
All staff working on our courses are in loco parentis and
as such look after the children. However, we also employ a member
of staff for the course duration who is specifically responsible
for student welfare, and usually at least 2 other members of staff
who are first aid trained. The welfare officer will monitor any
pre-existing medical condition a student may have (e.g. asthma),
maintain clear records of any student accident or illness, make
doctor's appointments and accompany the students to the doctor or
hospital where necessary. Medical drugs will not be administered
by our staff without the sanction of a medical professional (doctor
or nurse), unless the medicine has been brought from home with the
student, with clear instructions from the student's own doctor as
to its permitted use. Top
Tried
and Tested Methods / Procedures
- Staff are
chosen for their warmth, caring and professional approach; many
return to work with us each summer and bring a wealth of experience
to the courses. All staff working on the courses are officially
checked for their suitability to work with young people.
- The majority
of staff live in the student residences, are easily accessible
by the students if they have any problems, and follow a clear
rota of night-time duty whereby they check that all the students
are in their rooms at bedtime.
- We meet the
students (on specified dates/times) at London Heathrow airport
and transfer them by taxi, minibus or coach to the course centre.
- On arrival
at the course centre students are warmly greeted and shown to
their rooms.
- We take care
of any valuables, passport, air ticket and pocket money. Passports
and tickets are kept in the safe; money is banked and a daily
on-site banking service is operated for the students so that they
do not have to carry too much money around with them.
- We have an
open-office policy and the children are encouraged to approach
staff at any time with queries / problems they may have. All incidents
are clearly logged in the Course Record Book.
- Each child
has a tutorial with the Course Director during the first week
so that any problem areas can be swiftly resolved.
- All off-site
activities and excursions are carefully planned, with prescribed
ratio of staff:students accompanying the children. The students
are well-briefed on the time-table for the trip and are given
a clear, written itinerary.
- At the end
of the course our staff accompany the children to London Heathrow
airport and help them check in for their flight home.
It
is our aim that the students have a rewarding, exciting and enriching
stay. Their welfare and security are of as much importance to us,
as is their language learning experience
