Background to the post
The Academic Resources Centre (ARC) is a newly refurbished Edwardian building
which was opened in 1995. It houses the main academic resources of the
college and includes a stock of about 30,000 books, 60 English and foreign
language periodicals and newspapers and audio-visual resources. The centre
provides working space for 80 users and incorporates a computer network
of 17 computers for student use, a language laboratory, video-edit suite,
photocopier, library office and storage space.
The library management system is Softlink Europe's Alice for Windows.
The ARC is open all year round apart from Christmas - New Year. It is
open 7 days a week and evenings for 5 days. The full staff complement
comprises a Senior Librarian, Assistant Librarian, a full-time library
assistant who is also the AV technician and is responsible for much of
the IT support, and four part-time staff who are mainly responsible for
covering evening and weekend shifts. The post being advertised is to fill
the vacancy for the Assistant Librarian.
Principal duties
1. Deputising for the Senior Librarian
2. Assisting the Senior Librarian in running the Centre, including
- Assisting at the issue desk
- Assisting with library housekeeping tasks including
cataloguing
- Dealing with overdue reminders
- Shelving
- Issue of video keys and controls, fax/photocopy
cards, etc.
- Control of newspapers and periodicals
- Textbook sales to students
3. Assisting in oversight of the ARC computers (hardware and software)
and photocopier
4. Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment
5. Assisting staff and students in the use of the Centre's computers
6. Supervising students using the Centre
7. Assisting with orientation of new students to the ARC
8. Deputising for the AV technician on occasions
9. Maintaining the library website (www.stclareslibrary.org)
10. Other duties as required by the ARC Senior Librarian
Person specifications
We are looking for
- A qualified librarian
- 2-3 years experience, preferably in 16+ education
- An interest in working in an international community
of young people and staff
- Experience in working with computers and particularly
with library management software
- Experience in website management, preferably with
a knowledge of Dreamweaver
- An ability to communicate enthusiastically and
effectively to a wide variety of library users
Terms and conditions
Working hours:
Monday to Friday, 35 hours a week with one hour for lunch. Some flexibility
is essential here. This will involve occasional evening and weekend work
to ensure staffing of the Centre throughout its opening hours, for which
there is time off in lieu.
Holidays:
22 working days per year and the period over Christmas when the College
is closed (24 December - 1 January inclusive). The College operates during
bank holidays and work may be required on one or more of these days, with
time off in lieu.
Salary and benefits:
Salary will be on St.Clare's Scale 4 for Administrative, Technical and
Clerical staff within the range £15,053 - £17,416. Starting
salary will be determined according to qualifications and experience with
annual increments (subject to satisfactory performance) and annual cost
of living increases. The St. Clare's scale is related to similar national
scales.
Pension:
After three months service you are entitled to join the College's group
personal pension scheme. Employer pays up to 10% of salary subject to
the Employee contributing 5% of salary, the Employer's contribution being
double that of the Employee. Pension entitlement may be backdated to any
time from the date of commencement of employment.
Probationary period:
The first six months will be probationary, within which notice is two
weeks on either side. Thereafter notice is one month on either side.
