The post
The Dean of Students has the following principal areas of responsibility relating to students on the International Baccalaureate, English and Academic Subjects course and Preparatory IB course:
- pastoral care of students including welfare and discipline
- monitoring academic progress of students
- day to day responsibility for the operation of the courses, shared with the Director of Studies
Line management
The Dean of Students
- reports to the Vice Principal
- works closely with the Director of Studies
- line manages the Personal Tutor team
- works closely with the Nurse, Senior Resident and House Wardens in connection with pastoral care of students
- works closely with teachers, Heads of Department and the CAS Coordinator in connection with progress of students
- line manages the Academic Office Manager with the Director of Studies
Person Specification
Essential
You will:

Job description – responsibilities
- implementing and monitoring appropriate procedures for student welfare
- implementing and monitoring appropriate procedures for student discipline
- implementing and monitoring appropriate procedures for monitoring student progress in academic and non-academic areas
- implementing and maintaining appropriate systems for students' academic, disciplinary, medical and general records
- implementing and maintaining appropriate systems for communicating with parents on academic and other welfare and progress, including regular reports
- devising policies and procedures for student welfare, discipline and monitoring of progress, with the Vice Principal
- co-ordinating and managing the work of Personal Tutors
- co-ordinating and implementing the personal, social and health education programme
- arranging meetings of staff e.g. assessment meetings
- responsibility, shared with the Director of Studies, for day-to-day operations of the courses
- arranging meetings of students
- line management of the Academic Office Manager
- responding to parental queries regarding students
- orientation of students at the start of the academic year, and for new students arriving at other times
- Parents' Day arrangements
- assuming the essential duties of the Director of Studies in his absence
- membership of the IB Management Group
- other responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal or Principal

Terms and Conditions
Teaching load
Approximately half annual teaching load (approximately 10.5 hours/week).
Working hours
Normally within the hours of 08.30 - 18.00 Monday to Friday.
However, given the responsibilities of the Dean of Student position and the unpredictability with which issues arise, work will be required outside these times, including some work at in the evenings and at weekends. This work will be considered to be part of the normal duties of the Dean and no time off in lieu or overtime payment would be due.
Working periods
Full academic year.
Professional development / meeting days for teachers on the courses.
One full week (5 working days) before and after the academic year in addition to the pre-sessional professional development days.
Additional time outside the above as the Dean considers is necessary to perform his/her duties.
Holiday
Subject to the requirements above, holiday may be taken for the remaining time outside the academic year.
Salary
In the range £39,000 to £43,000, depending on experience – St. Clare's has its own salary scale.
Please note that:
Free lunch is provided during term time.
Fee reductions are offered for children attending the College.
(Residential accommodation may be available, but only in conjunction with appointment as a resident house warden.)
