The Advanced Studies Programme provides a great opportunity to enrich your English Language skills through a combination of English Language classes and academic subjects. Why St. Clare's?

Because we teach academic subjects at undergraduate level throughout the academic year, we are able to provide much more than just the standard English Language course that other English Language schools provide. We employ highly qualified instructors, lecturers and tutors to teach our academic subject classes, many of whom teach at the University of Oxford and publish books, papers and conference proceedings.

Who?

This course is ideal for gap-year students, students qualified for university entrance or undergraduates. Students attending this course study alongside our Liberal Arts students, the majority of whom come from American universities as part of their study abroad year.

What level of English?

You need a level of English which is at or above the following:
  • Cambridge First Certificate (FCE)
  • IELTS 5.5
  • TOEFL 197 (computer score) or 530 (paper score)
  • Enrolment on the course is not automatic. To ensure you have the right English language level, we assess you with a short telephone interview and/or a written test. We also check your academic qualifications and references before accepting you on the course.

    Course Programme

  • 10 hours of English Language classes per week
  • You choose 3 academic subjects, each of which you study for 2 or 3 hours per week - take a look at the subjects offered
  • You will be taught in small groups and in your subject studies you will be taught alongside English native speakers from American universities
  • The course requires background reading, assignments and study visits
  • You also have the chance to take English Language examinations such as Cambridge Advanced or Proficiency or IELTS
