St. Clare's Scholar's Programme

We invite applications for our Scholar's Programme from highly motivated students who would particularly enjoy an academic challenge in the fields of Philosophy, Religious Studies or Theology, Social Sciences or the Humanities.

The Scholar's Programme is a joint initiative between St Clare's and Blackfriars' Hall, a Permanent Private Hall of Oxford University governed by the English Dominican Friars; additionally, from September 2010, St. Clare's and Regent's Park College, University of Oxford.

All Scholars acquire Oxford University Visiting Student status.

The Scholar's Programme of study (15-18 units of academic credit)

  • One-to-one tutorial teaching at Blackfriars in one course from the areas of Theology, Philosophy or Religion Studies or combination of one of the latter and Classics, Literature or History (six units of credit) OR
  • One-to-one tutorial teacher at Regent's Park College in one course from the areas of English Language and Literature, Economics, Politics, Philosophy, Ancient or Modern History, Arts History or Classics (six units of credit)
  • Three St. Clare's Liberal Arts courses (each equivalent to three units)
  • plus the option of the St. Clare's Seminar Series (three units)
Other benefits of the Scholar's Programme

Access to all University of Oxford libraries, electronic databases, lectures and seminars, computing services (including OU email account) and computer services shop
  • Blackfriars Hall
    • at least one lecture course at Blackfriars Hall;
    • access to language courses in Latin, Greek or Hebrew during the Autumn semester when an appropriate course is available;
    • membership of the Junior Common Room
    • invitations to Blackfriars' social events
  • Regent's Park College
    • full membership of the Junior Common Room;
    • invitations to Formal Hall and other social events;
    • access to most student activities and clubs at Regent's Park College

Application procedures

In addition to the completed application pack for Liberal Arts Programme entry, Scholarship Programme applicants must provide the following:
  1. Evidence of an A-/A grade average (3.6 GPA in the case of US undergraduates)
  2. A separate Scholarship Programme application letter
  3. An academic reference endorsing suitability for the Scholarship Programme
  4. Submission of an assessed essay or research paper from home university
  5. a profile of personal and academic interests
  6. a recent photograph
