Emblem of Innocence, foil for evil
As part of the Representing Childhood Bardwell Seminar Series, Professor Emeritus Barrie Bullen, University of Reading,
will be giving the next talk in the Seminar Series.
His talk will be ‘Emblem of Innocence, foil for evil – the representation of the child in late
nineteenth-century art and literature'.
Prof. Bullen has a world-renowned expertise on the parallels between literature and the visual arts through
books such as The Pre-Raphaelite Body, and has recently written a new biography on Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
His books include The myth of the Renaissance in nineteenth-century writing (1995), The Pre-Raphaelite body:
fear and desire in painting, poetry and criticism (1998), Byzantium rediscovered (2003), a history of the Byzantine
revival, and European crosscurrents: British criticism and continental art 1810-1910 (2005).
