St. Clare's has had a lot of success in all its endeavours recently - the perfect end to the semester!

St. Clare's beat D'Overbroeck's by 10 points last week- here's the match report by Coach Franky Marulanda:

Our second league game was against D’Overbroecks, which is a new team apart from an ex National League U-16 Oxford City Hoops player who was D’Overbroecks main scoring force.
St Clare’s tried out a set of new offensive moves, which provided a bit of structure as far as spacing and timing is concerned. The team was a lot more confident with their movement and seemed more assertive offensively. Defensively, however, there’s a lot more work to be done.
St Clare’s came out victorious 47-37. We are thankful to the Referees and Table Officials.

#6 Luka with 12 pts
#10 Vytas (Captain) with 10 pts
#9 Simonas with 6 pts
#12 Ali with 2 pts

A lot of effort and great help came from the bench in the hands of Klaivi, Tom, John, Zeyn and Ivar.

Double win for the Chess Team!

St. Clare's team have achieved two consecutive wins in the Oxfordshire League by beating Bicester 2 in an away match with the score 4–2 and Cowley 5 in a home match with 4.5–1.5. It is worth mentioning that two players – Sergey Sandyrkin and Roberto Caiozzo – scored brilliant 2 out of 2, while Dzhangir Bayandarov and Patrik Dudaj got 1.5 out of 2.

At the moment St. Clare's is only 1 point behind the second Witney 5. Next one is a home match on Tuesday, 8 December against Cowley Workers 2.

Senior Maths Challenge

On Monday 23rd November, Yanrong Wang, Chenyi (Chloe) Ding, Tianyi (Abbygail) Sheng and Chloe Caron achieved by far the highest ranking St. Clare's has ever achieved in the UKMT Senior Maths Team Challenge held at Cherwell School, just 5 minutes walk from St. Clare's.

The competition comprises three rounds of intense mathematics in which success depends on speed and accuracy, patience and persistence. There are ten questions in the group round in which the teams have 40 minutes to solve. Teams must decide their own strategy: work in pairs, as a group or individually. In the group round the team did well to score 48/60.

The "crossnumber" task was next: similar to a crossword but with numerical answers. Teams work in pairs. One pair has the across clues, and the other pair has the down clues. Pairs work independently to complete the grid using logic and deduction. Hopes were high for this round but some unforced errors crept in and the girls managed 53/60.

Not to be discouraged, the girls made up for this in the toughest section, the - the "shuttle" round. Here, teams compete against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team is divided into Pair A (given Questions 1 and 3) and Pair B (given Questions 2 and 4). Question 1 can be solved independently of the others, but the answer to each subsequent question is dependent on the previous answer. The girls showed tenacity and teamwork right until the final seconds. As IB students, this level of involvement and determination will carry them far.

The team pessimistically felt they had finished around in 15th place out of 34 but were delighted to find that they had finished 4th and they rightly felt proud of themselves, showing great character as well as speed and accuracy of thought. It is also worth congratulating the team for the practice they volunteered to carry out over the weekend before the competition.

Plans are already being considered for aiming to win the competition outright next year!
