Course Structure

Learn English immersed in 400 acres of Surrey countryside, improving your fluency and confidence through language projects linked to varied, topical weekly themes.

All weekly themes in the English programme are linked to sustainability, allowing students to make the most of the natural environment around them. Whether learning about “Farm to Fork” on the working farm or exploring local woodlands, lessons are practical, engaging and rooted in real experiences.

Themes of the Week

Week 1: Fast fashion

This week takes a closer look at the clothing industry and the hidden costs behind it, environmental, financial and more. From celebrity fashion trends to social media “hauls,” students will explore how consumer choices affect people and the planet. Using English to debate, design, and share ideas, they’ll consider what a more sustainable style could look like.

Week 2: Rewilding our world

From rewilding projects to the return of the English meadow, this week explores how bringing nature back (from the brink?) can transform landscapes and lives. Students will discuss the big questions — should humans step back, or step in to protect? — while using English to research, create, and present their own wild solutions.

Week 3: The future of cities

With smart technology, climate change, and housing crises in the news, what will the cities of tomorrow look like? This week, students explore trending ideas from vertical gardens to 15-minute cities. We’ll look to architecture and innovative city plans including The Line and other ambitious projects around the world. Working in English, they’ll design, debate, and present their own visions of sustainable urban life.

Week 4: Farm to fork

From viral food trends to conversations about food miles and fair trade, this week uncovers the journey from field to plate. Students will investigate what’s behind the food they eat, from farming practices to supermarket shelves, and use English to discuss, compare, and present ways to make our diets more sustainable.

Afternoon Electives

The electives are intentionally designed to be unplugged experiences, encouraging students to reconnect with nature and hands-on creativity while still recognising the value of technology in modern learning.

Students customise their learning by choosing one afternoon elective per week:

Animal Health & Conservation

Explore the world of animal care and wildlife conservation through hands-on experiences and guided learning. Students will participate in a zookeeper workshop, conduct a biodiversity survey in nature, and gain insights into conservation efforts.

Bushcraft

Step into the wild and master essential outdoor skills! Students will learn to build shelters, light fires, navigate the wilderness, and cook in the great outdoors – all set in beautiful woodland surroundings.

Football Coaching

Boost your skills and confidence on the pitch with expert coaching from a fully qualified FA coach. Sessions cover technique, teamwork, and match play, with fun, tailored activities for every level of experience.

Visual Arts

Unleash your creativity with a range of artistic techniques and media, inspired by the natural beauty of Merrist Wood. Students will experiment with different styles and develop their own unique creative projects.
