General English Courses for adults 18+ (June - August)
Special programmes have been devised for the summer period at St Clare's:

  • Courses run from mid June until the end of August or early September
  • Two or three-week programmes are available
  • English language studies are supported by a varied programme of activities
  • Group classes (maximum 12 per class) operate at all levels from elementary to advanced
  • The focus of lessons is to activate your language skills and build confidence in using the language fluently and accurately
  • Complementary classes (English in Context ) encourage language development through ‘special-interest' studies, such as Popular Music and Film or Business English.
  • A full programme of social activities and excursions, in the evenings and weekends, is an integral part of the course.
The General English programme in the summer consists of:
21 hours per week
15 hours: Classes cover all language skills (speaking, writing, listening, reading)
plus 6 hours: 2 English in Context subjects or IELTS preparation

English in Context Subjects
Students combine their language skills study with two English in Context Subjects. These classes take place in the afternoon.  There are 3 one-hour lessons per week for each subject.  This is an interesting way of developing your language and vocabulary and there is a wide range of subjects to choose from (see below).

Here are some samples

Popular Music & Film Understanding Global Issues

English Combination Courses
This course offers the best of both worlds - the individual attention of One-to-One tuition and the interaction of small group learning.
5 Individual lessons per week
You can focus exclusively on your needs and interests in a 'safe' environment.  Feel confident about making mistakes - and then learning from them - before trying out your new language skills with other learners:

  • Improve your pronunciation and listening skills
  • Identify and eliminate your mistakes
  • Extend and enrich your vocabulary
  • Focus on English for your career (medical, legal, pharmaceutical, engineering, aviation, etc.)
  • Prepare for a specific examination (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.)
  • Practise the language of making a presentation and negotiating

15 Group lessons per week
Join a group and learn to interact and communicate through English.  Enjoy the opportunity to practise what you have learnt in the individual lessons and socialise with other like-minded learners:

  • Review and practise the building blocks of the language - tenses, structures, etc.
  • Improve your vocabulary through word storage strategies
  • Practise the fluency and accuracy of your English through simulations and language learning activities
  • Interact with other group members and learn from each other
  • Enjoy the friendship during break-times and over meals and join in the social activities during the evenings.

One-to-One Tuition
Individual (one-to-one) lessons are, without doubt, the best way to build confidence in the language in the shortest possible time.
To sit with your teacher and to focus exclusively on your needs and interests is an opportunity you should not miss. You can focus on :

  • Improving your own specific weaknesses – perhaps your pronunciation or your listening skills need attention
  • Building your confidence in private as preparation for facing the ‘real' world
  • Extending your vocabulary for your career development – English for legal, medical, engineering, academic and other career paths
  • Preparing for the specific demands of your chosen examination (TOEFL, TOEIC, CEBIT etc.)
  • Practising presentation or negotiating skills for your business
  • Developing learner strategies for continuing your language acquisition on your return home
There are two programmes available throughout the year:
Fully Individual - 25 Individual lessons per week as a separate programme
Combination - 5 or 10 individual lessons per week as part of a Combination programme (15 Group lessons plus 5 or 10 Individual lessons per week)
