St. Clare's University Foundation Course is designed for students who have finished secondary education in their own country, wish to study at a UK university and need to prepare in English language and other subjects.

The course lasts 1 year (2 semesters: August/September-December, January-May).

There are opportunities to interact with students on other courses, including US university students.

Conditions for entry

  • entry age is 18
  • secondary education must be completed in the student's own country - check your client's education requirements in this list
  • student's level of English should be one of:
    • IELTS grade 5.5 or above with at least 5 in every skill
    • TOEFL with a minimum score of 197 (computer test) or 530 (paper test)
    • a good pass at Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)
    • IGCSE or GCSE English Language at grade C or above

    Documentary evidence is required to substantiate all examination scores.

If student is not qualified or ready to start the course, he/she could take a full-time English Language course first, or instead apply for the 2-year IB Diploma course, (subject to age and ability).

Subjects: in addition to English Language and English for Academic Purposes/IELTS preparation, the student choose one of 2 "streams":

  • Business Stream: 3 of: Business Studies, Mathematics, Economics or Psychology
  • Social Studies Stream: 3 of: Economics, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology or Mathematics

At the end of the second semester, students take examinations in IELTS and 3 subjects (by coursework and final examination).

St. Clare's University Foundation Course candidates have been offered places at many UK universities, including Durham, University College London, King's College London, Edinburgh, York, Oxford Brookes, Reading and Sheffield. A full list of university destinations is available here.
